For many Canadians a good night’s sleep can be difficult to obtain. More than one third of Canadians report that they have poor sleep quality.1 Lack of sleep can have many unpleasant effects, leading to excessive sleepiness, fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, depression, irritability, excessive eating, reduced performance at work and an increased risk of accidents.2-4
The good news is that there are natural solutions that can help you to achieve a restful night’s sleep. Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound found in plants and animals. It has been extensively researched and used as a natural and safe aid for promoting restful sleep. In humans, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, a gland about the size of a pea, located in the centre of the brain. The melatonin signal forms part of the system that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle by causing drowsiness and lowering the body’s temperature.5,6
Melatonin helps to maintain the body’s circadian rhythm, an internal 24-hour “clock” that plays a critical role in regulating when we fall asleep and when we wake up. When it is dark, the body produces more melatonin; when it is light out, the production of melatonin drops. Being exposed to bright lights in the evening or too little light during the day can disrupt the body’s normal melatonin cycles. For example, jet lag and shift work can disrupt melatonin cycles.5,6 Supplementation with melatonin has been shown to significantly help reduce the effects of jet lag and other disruptions to the body’s internal clock.6
As the body ages, Melatonin levels often decrease and low Melatonin levels have been associated with insomnia in the elderly.5 Supplementing with melatonin can therefore help to combat insomnia in elderly individuals and other people whose natural production of Melatonin is below normal. Furthermore, in addition to improving sleep quality, melatonin helps improve morning alertness and does not produce withdrawal symptoms when discontinued.5
SleepSense contains a clinically effective dose of melatonin to help re-set the body’s internal rhythm and help ensure a restful night’s sleep. SleepSense also contains Vitamin B12 to enhance the effects of Melatonin. Studies show that Vitamin B12 causes an earlier release of Melatonin at night, which can reset the sleep-wake cycle.7
