STRESS AND THE ADRENAL GLANDS

The adrenals release various stress response hormones that guide our body’s reaction to a stressor. Our ability to adapt to stress depends upon optimal function of the adrenal glands and in particular, the regulation of the main stress hormone, cortisol.1

Early symptoms of adrenal stress include: fatigue, depression, cold hands or feet, dizziness, low back pain, asthma, allergies, sweet cravings, hormonal imbalances, irritability, headaches, colitis and other gastrointestinal problems, skin problems, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.1,2

Research has shown that cortisol imbalances can also lead to blood sugar problems, weight gain, compromised immune function, infertility, chronic fatigue, bone loss, high triglyceride levels and heart disease.2,3,4

Natural Stress Relief

The good news is that a number of natural ingredients have been shown to help balance the body’s stress response, helping to improve health and reduce adrenal stress. The ingredients in AdrenaSense include well studied herbal adaptogens such as Rhodiola, Suma, Siberian Ginseng, Schisandra and Ashwagandha. Adaptogens are nature’s stress relievers, and they work by helping increase the capacity of the body’s stress system to stay balanced and to respond appropriately during exposure to stressful conditions.2,5

Rhodiola: Rhodiola is one of the best known and most effective adaptogens available. Rhodiola has been studied in many individuals exposed to chronic stress, including doctors, students and military cadets, and has been shown over and over to reduce the negative effects of stress and to improve physical and mental endurance.6,7,8

Siberian Ginseng: Siberian ginseng is not really a type of ginseng at all. However, it is a powerful adaptogen, with well-studied stress-relieving properties. In humans, Siberian ginseng has been shown to reduce stress and the symptoms associated with chronic fatigue.9 It has also been shown to support the immune system, reduce cold symptoms and to be more effective than Echinacea for enhancing the immune system.9,10

Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a well-known adaptogen that provides powerful support against stress. Research suggests that Ashwagandha works by helping to calm the nervous system, preventing it from overreacting to stress.11 Studies have shown that Ashwagandha is superior to regular ginseng at helping animals and humans to cope with stressful situations.11

Schisandra: Schisandra is another adaptogen that has been shown to decrease the effects of stress by reducing mental fatigue, improving mental endurance and reducing fatigue.12 In combination with Rhodiola and Siberian ginseng, schisandra has also been shown to help improve immune function and recovery from illness.12

Suma: Also known as Brazilian ginseng, Suma has a long history of use in South America for a variety of ailments, and has also been used in Japan. It is documented to have adaptogenic effects, helping to reduce stress and fatigue.13
